About Town of Marshfield

Settled in 1841, Marshfield grew to nearly 2,000 residents by 1900, including the villages of St. Cloud and Mt. Calvary.  Both later incorporated (1909 and 1962), reducing the town’s population.

Located in northeast Fond du Lac County, Marshfield borders Taycheedah, Forest, Calumet, and the Sheboygan County towns of Russell and Greenbush.  It includes the communities of St. Joe, Calvary Station (aka Puddlefort), and part of Malone, covering 34.3 square miles.

Part of Wisconsin’s “Holy Land”, the town features scenic landscapes, open spaces, and natural resources.  Wolf Lake and its county-maintained park and boat landing sit at its center.  The Green Field Wind Farm, with 44 turbines, began operating in 2008.  The area also includes Villa Rosa, assisted living. 

Today, Marshfield is served by the Mt. Calvary Fire Department and Mt. Calvary Ambulance and has grown from a swampy frontier to a thriving agricultural community with residential, commercial, and mining activity.

The Town of Marshfield has belonged to more towns than any other in Fond du lac County. On April 17, 1852, the area was detached from the Towns of Calumet and Forest and briefly named Kossuth. It was vacated on February 10, 1853 and the land returned to Calumet and Forest. Finally, on November 22, 1855, the County Board formally established the Town of Marshfield. The name was chosen because of the extensive marsh tracts that dominated the landscape. Early surveyor C. T. V. King described it in 1835 as "a poor township … too great a portion of it is marsh and swamp."
